Are you preparing for a road trip this summer? Everyone needs time away, and the long days of summer are the perfect time to explore new places. Before you jump in your car and hit the road, take time to ensure your journey will be safe.
5 Tips for Preparing for Your Summer Road Trip
The last thing you want while on vacation is to break down on the highway or to be in a car accident. Below are five simple steps to help ensure your family is safe while on your trip:
- Check Your Tires
Checking your tires seems like an obvious tip, but you would be surprised how many people fail to do this before going on a long trip. Your tires may be fine for short drives around town, but extended travel at high speeds is different. Debris on the highway can cause an unexpected blowout. Additionally, the summer heat causes fluctuations in your tire pressure, which can lead to a flat tire. It is difficult to control a vehicle when a tire goes flat or has a blowout, which often is the cause of numerous accidents.
Before your family hits the road, confirm that your tires are in good condition. Additionally, make sure you have a jack, lug wrench, and a spare tire in your vehicle, so you are prepared if a flat or blowout occurs. And remember, changing a tire on the side of the highway is extremely dangerous, so contact highway patrol or a tow truck to assist you.
- Get Plenty of Sleep and Avoid Distractions
It is often difficult to sleep the night before a big vacation, but driver fatigue can contribute significantly to wrecks. A long drive on a warm day can lead to drowsiness, so alternate drivers or stop to get rest if you feel drowsy while driving.
Driving while distracted also significantly contributes to accidents. Texting while driving has become a major distraction and contributor to wrecks. Additionally, talking on the phone, eating, attending to children or pets, or anything else that takes your eyes off the road increases your chances of an accident.
- Prepare for an Unexpected Breakdown
Even a new car can experience unexpected mechanical issues, so it is important to be prepared. If you are stuck on the side of the road, especially in a remote location, it can be risky and stressful. Being prepared with an emergency kit, flashlights, essential tools, water, and food can help keep your family calm while you wait for help to arrive if you are unable to fix the issue.
Remember, being broken down on the side of the road is dangerous. To alert other drivers, be sure to move your car off the road as far as safely possible, turn on your hazard lights, and open your hood.
- Check the Weather
With smartphones and computers, we have access to information about the weather at our fingertips. Driving during storms can be dangerous, so it is helpful to check the weather in advance and plan your route accordingly. While you may not be able to avoid rain, you should avoid tornadoes, wildfires, and other such extreme weather events if possible.
Before you start your trip, confirm that your windshield wipers are in good condition and work properly. When driving in the rain, turn your headlights on and keep a greater distance between you and other vehicles. Slick roadways make it more difficult to stop. Additionally, do not use cruise control on wet pavement because it can cause you to hydroplane and lose control of your car.
- Prepare for Road Construction and Congestion
It seems road construction occurs wherever you go these days. When traffic gets congested, wrecks are more likely to occur. Thus, checking for traffic updates to avoid construction and congestion is worth your time. When possible, avoid the highly congested areas, even if it takes you a few minutes longer. You might be surprised at what you see when you get off the beaten path!
